Muslim Women From Around the World to Meet Congressman Keith Ellison

“I am proud to be a part of Karamah’s Law and Leadership Program.”
- Congressman Keith Ellison

Washington, D.C. - Tuesday July 17, 2007

“Karamah: Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights” (Karamah), a DC-based nonprofit organization, will hold a meeting between Congressman Keith Ellison and a delegation of Muslim women leaders from around the world on Tuesday, July 17, 2007 from 8:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. in Room 2456 Rayburn House Office Building that is located on Independence Avenue S.W. & South Capitol Street.  This important event will be part of Karamah’s Fifth Annual Law and Leadership Summer Program, which includes education about American Muslims.   Participants in the program hail from countries as far as Belgium, The Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Senegal.  They also include women from Canada, and various parts of the United States.  Members of Congress and staff have been invited to attend.

“I am proud to be a part of Karamah’s Law and Leadership Program: ‘Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights.’  I commend Karamah for your dedication to ensuring that tomorrow’s leaders are steeped in fundamental human rights, and committed to better international understanding.  Our tomorrows look brighter because of your work,” commented Congressman Keith Ellison.

The Law and Leadership Summer Program (LLSP) is an intensive program designed to educate Muslim women about legal issues of importance to them, and to develop further their leadership qualities. The participants attend three weeks of thought-provoking programs, including lectures and workshops that cover a multitude of topics such as Leadership Development, Conflict Resolution, and Comparative Islamic and American Constitutional Law.  Established in 2002, LLSP influences how Muslim women at home and abroad approach their faith, understand their human rights, and exercise leadership.

Karamah is a charitable, educational organization that focuses on the domestic and global issues of human rights for Muslims, especially women. KARAMAH is committed to the principle that research and education are necessary tools for peaceful social change.
