On Monday, August 19, 2002, KARAMAH hosted a meeting, arranged
by the State Department, with five distinguished Algerian
professors of Islamic Studies, including the President of
the High Islamic Council, Dr. Cheikh Bouamrane. Other professors
included:
- Dr. Messadi Ammar, the Dean of the Faculty of Islamic
Sciences at the University of Algiers;
- Dr. Abdellah Boukhalkhal, the Rector of the University
of Emir Abdelkader for Islamic Studies;
- Dr. Mustafa Boutefnouchet, Professor of Sociology, University
of Algiers and Member of the High Islamic
Council; and
- Dr. Youcef Hocine, Head of the Department of Religion
at the Faculty of Islamic Sciences at
the University of Algiers.
The delegation and the KARAMAH staff exchanged views about
Islamic Law and the status of women in Algeria. KARAMAH
also described its mission of helping Muslim women worldwide.
The discussion was friendly and fruitful. At the end of
the meeting, the head of the delegation encouraged KARAMAH
to visit Algeria and start a dialogue with the Algerian
women there. The two groups also agreed to exchange publications.
