On Saturday, November 7, 2009, KARAMAH held a special Islamic Law and Leadership Workshop at the U.S. Embassy in Brussels, Belgium. During the one-day workshop, KARAMAH's lawyers, professors and Islamic scholars provided a series of intensive trainings in Islamic law, conflict resolution and leadership development. The program included discussions on the notion of leadership in Islamic law and challenges to leadership facing Muslim women in Belgium.

The workshop in Belgium was designed as a condensed version of Karamah’s three-week Law and Leadership Summer Program, which takes place annually in Washington, DC.
KARAMAH has long recognized an increasing need to expand its distinguished Law and Leadership Program to reach women in more parts of the world, including Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The Brussels workshop proves vitally important in providing new audiences of women with the Islamic legal training and leadership skills to effect positive change in their communities.
In addition to holding the workshop, KARAMAH established a steering committee for opening a permanent branch in Brussels responding to the unique needs of Muslim women in Europe.
This workshop was made possible by the generous support of the United States Embassy in Brussels.
