February 2, 2010

On Tuesday, February 2, 2010, KARAMAH met with two delegates from Indonesia visiting the U.S. under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program for a project on “Democracy and Multiculturalism.”

Ms. Evi Sofia Inayati, from Central Java, leads Nasyiatul Aisyiyah (NA), an educational organization focused on women’s rights and Islam, and Mr. Taufik Arbain is a university scholar from Kalimantan (Borneo). The talk explored advocacy methods in the U.S. and Indonesia in support of Muslim women and programs to encourage women’s leadership, civic participation, economic independence and access to education, healthcare and social services.

The participants and KARAMAH’s staff expressed interest in cooperating on educational and leadership-building initiatives.
