KARAMAH Commemorates
The 61st Anniversary of
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Dean Leary Davis delivers remarks at Karamah's historic headquarters in Washington, DC

On Friday, December 11, 2009, KARAMAH hosted a year-end reception commemorating the 61st anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Human Rights, the landmark document setting out fundamental rights to be universally protected by all people of all nations.

The reception featured remarks by Dr. Azizah al-Hibri, President and Founder of KARAMAH; Dean Leary Davis, Founding Dean of Elon School of Law; and three graduates of KARAMAH's educational Law and Leadership Program: Zohra Ayub, Farhana Shah and Nadia Shahram.

Dr. al-Hibri discussed the purpose of forming KARAMAH in the 1990s, the organization's achievements, its current activites and its future plans. Dean Davis talked about KARAMAH's Law and Leadership Program and the role of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on future civil rights legislation in America. Law and Leadership alumni remarked on how their lives benefited from KARAMAH's educational summer program.

In the spirit of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, KARAMAH is a human rights organization of Muslim women lawyers dedicated to promoting dignity for all human beings through education, scholarship and legal outreach.
