KARAMAH: Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights, PAWLA: Pakistan Women Lawyers Association, and Women In Islam, Inc. will hold a parallel event at the United Nations to coincide with the 56th session of the UN’s Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).
This panel lecture will feature leaders from the co-sponsoring NGOs who will discuss how Islamic models of women’s financial rights can empower women to take leading roles in eradicating poverty and hunger. Panelists will also discuss how education on women’s rights in Islam would help Muslim women take on these leadership roles, especially in rural areas. Speakers will include Engy Abdelkader, Esq., Vice president of KARAMAH, Legal Fellow with the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding, and a prominent attorney; Abed Awad, Esq., attorney, community leader, and widely respected expert on Islamic Law and laws of Arab countries; Khanum Gauhar Aijaz, Former Sindh Minister for Social Welfare & Women Development in Pakistan and a leader of PAWLA: Pakistan Women Lawyers Association; and the moderator will be Sr. Aisha al-Adawiya, Founder of Women In Islam, Inc. and President of KARAMAH. Following presentations from panelists, there will be a question and answer session.
