On December 4th, Dr. Condoleezza Rice attended
an Iftar diner at KARAMAH headquarters along with more than
sixty women representing a variety of ethnic backgrounds and
affiliations. Soon after the breaking of the fast, Imamah
Sanaa’ Affandi of KARAMAH led the maghreb (early evening)
prayer. This public prayer was very significant because an
imamah (a female imam) led the praying women. The event was
recorded in full by the media.
After prayer, Irfana Anwer, Executive Director of the Washington,
DC branch of KARAMAH, gave a welcoming speech in which she
discussed some of the organization’s activities.
After dinner, Faiza El-Hibri, a young Muslim girl, read verses
from the Qur’an. These were followed by remarks by Dr.
al-Hibri and Dr. Rice. Thereafter, Dr. Rice mingled with the
attendees, asking them questions, answering their inquiries
and getting to know them. Before departure, Dr. Rice promised
to return for another event at KARAMAH where substantive issues
could be discussed.
